  1. Willy Russell was born in Whiston which is close to Liverpool (So we can assume this gave him a psychological understanding about Liverpool culture to include in his works)

    As well as being a playwright and songwriter, Willy Russell is also an author, he published his first novel entitled 'The Wrong Boy' in 2000, which has been translated into fifteen different languages.

  2. Willy Russell's parents were employed at a book publishers and encouraged him to read as a child.

    He received BAFTA nominations for the adapted screenplays of his works 'Shirley Valentine' and 'Educating Rita' which was also nominated for an Academy Award.

  3. He has a centre for children and adults who stammer. It was opened in 1996 and is called the Willy Russell centre (how original).

    He graduated from Hope University.

  5. After leaving school, Russell took on a variety of jobs, which included writing songs to be performed in local folk clubs.

    His first success was about The Beatles. It was titled "John, Paul, George, Ringo … and Bert".

    Russell has written songs since the early 1960s, and has written the music to most of his plays and musicals. He also co-wrote "The Show", the theme song to the 1985 ITV drama series Connie.

  8. He put his stamp out as a favored artist through his plays (some of which went on to be remade into televised materials).
    One of Mr Russell's latest re-invented plays has been 'Our Day Out' which talks of a group of recess Liverpool kids taken out on a trip (this play was recently displayed at the Empire Theater - Liverpool- from august to september 2010.
